My 7th grade Home Economics teacher had a saying.
“When it doubt, throw it out.”
That stuck with me and had prob saved me multiple trips to the ER with stomach poisoning.
Yesterday I was on the phone with my photo editor friend. I was explaining to her that I was feeling anxious and somewhat doubtful. There is an upcoming portrait session I have with a local artist that I’m really excited about. I’m location scouting, building a set, doing some tech stuff on the back end and I really think like this can be a nice little set of images that will allow me to stretch my wings beyond being know as the sports/running photog. At the end of the day I want to make beautiful images with talented people. I mean musicians are talented too right?
Anywho, I’m telling my friend that I’m a little nervous spending a little extra than usual on props, backgrounds, etc. But as I was saying out loud, I tried to listen to where the fear was coming from. And it was 100% scarcity mindset.
“If this doesn’t come out the way I think, It’s going to be like I wasted money and time.”
What a big, fat lie.
My friend reminded me that this was an investment into myself and my craft. “What’s the alternative, you don’t go all out and it doesn’t turn out how you want and you stay where you are at.” UGHH. She’s right.
So if any of you are feeling stuck or contemplating whether to invest in a personal project or something thats a bit of a departure from what you usually do, he’s a quote for you. Not sure if that means dropping $10k on a new camera body or $25 on a reflector, but you do you boo boo.
“When in doubt, try it out”
If you’re fearful, identify where that fear or doubt it coming from?
Is it founded?
Is it real?
What’s the alternative?
IDEAS I’M NOODLING
- Possible ad for a product line where they take footage of the fall major marathons and compile them with a nice voice over. Message could be welcome back Marathon Runners. Message could be, “I’m the marathon and I’ve been waiting for you” Could be used to launch clothing product or have a brand align with the values of running a marathon.
- Filming the Paul Short Invite Gold Race tomorrow with my vintage Hi-8 Sony Handycam. I got it all wired up to fit on my stabilizer and can’t wait to use it!
- That artist I was talking about working with is super talented. Check her IG out.
- There is a Bodybuiding competition this weekend. No I’m not entering but I love the idea of a hard strobe light with hard shadow pointed right at this ripped, super tan, extra make up athletes. I think that would look awesome. Like this photo below I took.
